Ask Away

  • What is a Celebrant and their role? A Funeral celebrant in the UK is an independent professional who can plan a celebration of life, with the person on end of life care, or if you prefer, with the Family of the deceased. This leads a highly personalised funeral ceremony. As Celebrants, we are not tied to any religious institute, however we can accomodate religious aspects to your funeral if you wish.

  • What is a Soul Midwife and their role? A Soul midwife, sometimes can be referred to as an end of life doula, or companion in death. A non medical holistic practitioner who can provided spiritual, emotional and practical support to individuals who are dying. Ensuring they have a peaceful and dignified death in the home, hospice or care home, simultaneously support families through this time.

  • Do you have to go through a Funeral Director (FD), to find a Celebrant ? The simple answer is NO. If you want to you can, as many celebrants have direct links with the FD, however you can chose any Celebrant to lead on your loved ones 'Celebration of life'. Here at Nicola Janes we encourage you to research the best suited celebrant to honour your loved one.

  • Can you include Prayers hymns and scriptures ? Your loved ones celebration can be exactly as they would have wished for, their day their way .

  • Does a ceremony have to be in a crematoria ?Celebrant led services have no legal status, therefore you can hold them anywhere . Yes your garden, cemeteries, crematoriums, woodland, natural burial sites, in a church hall, in a barn, simply where ever you desire, and whatever reflects your loved one the best.

  • Can services be themed or unconventional? Absolutely they can! As a celebrant our aim is to make a celebration of life Unique. Including, specific themes: hobbies: bespoke music choices: involve family & friends to speak or read tributes, even coloured themes.

  • When and how do we meet? Most families can contact the celebrant direct, either prior, to discuss with the person on end of life care, or within the first week or two following a death. Or may be your loved one has already spoken to a celebrant prior to their passing, this is common, to avoid distress for their family. The celebrant arranges a time to meet either in your home , online, or at another convenient location, this is to give you support, listen to the stories of your loved one and gather information to write , or assist you to write the eulogy. The information will be taken away, the eulogy drafted , as many times as you like within the time frame and dates of the funeral, to liaise with the chosen funeral director, and confirm completion and timings. All the pressure taken out of your hands at this emotional time of sadness.

  • How much does a celebrant cost ? Approximately £30* an hour or £230* + depending on the location, complexity, of the service and other personal requirements of support. i.e, Post funeral Counselling, double slot at a place of crematoria, ( prices will be quoted at the time as requested services ).

  • How is the celebrant paid? This can be invoiced direct from the celebrant, or if you prefer this can be added to the funeral Directors final invoice , who will pass on the fee.
